Multi-championship crew chief Mike Green has joined Elite Motorsports to lead its Top Fuel program beginning with the 2026 Mission Foods NHRA Drag Racing Series season.

Team owner Richard Freeman said the decision followed several weeks of discussions with potential candidates before Green emerged as the clear choice after talks at the Dallas event.

“We had conversations with a handful of potential crew chiefs over the past several weeks, all great options. But, when Mike and I talked after the Dallas event, it felt like a natural fit for both of us,” Freeman said. “We’re excited to have him on board. He’s a hall of fame caliber crew chief who has proven he’s capable of putting together a program to win championships, that’s what we’re after. He’s known for elevating those around him and we have that same growth mentality here at Elite Motorsports.”

Green will oversee the formation of Elite’s new Top Fuel operation centered around driver Tony Stewart. He will also guide the development of an expanded program to license Pro Stock standouts Aaron Stanfield and Erica Enders in 2026.

Freeman said Green’s addition reflects Elite’s long-term plan to expand beyond Pro Stock and establish a lasting presence in nitro competition. The move positions the team to develop new leadership talent across multiple NHRA categories.

Green, a Sacramento, California native, began his professional drag racing career in 1987 with Darrell Gwynn’s Top Fuel team. His career has included championship-winning tenures with driver Tony Schumacher as well as successful stints with Cory McClenathan, as well as Funny Car veteran Tommy Johnson Jr.

Most recently, Green served as crew chief for Justin Ashley at SCAG Racing, where he led the team to four victories during the 2025 season before departing with two races remaining. Ashley currently sits No. 2 in Top Fuel points.

“I’m excited to be joining Elite Motorsports and to help them build their Top Fuel program,” Green said. “With talent like Tony Stewart, Erica Enders and Aaron Stanfield being in the mix, this was an opportunity I couldn’t pass up. I look forward to being part of Elite and Richard’s vision to grow the sport.”

Green expressed appreciation for his time with Ashley and the SCAG Racing crew but said he’s focused on the next chapter of his career. “I’ve enjoyed working with Justin these past years, he’s a brilliant driver and I’m disappointed I won’t have the opportunity to see him through to the end of the 2025 season,” he said. “I wish him and the guys all the best of luck, I’ll be rooting for them. Now I’m looking ahead to 2026.”

Green will assume his new role immediately as Elite Motorsports begins preparations for the NHRA season opener, the Gatornationals, March 6–8, 2026, at Gainesville Raceway in Florida.
