JOEY OKSAS AND BILL BERNARD LEAD WINNERS AT MWDRS U.S. 131 NATIONALS

For the second consecutive race, Joey Oksas drove his way to the winner’s circle, picking up the Pro Mod victory at the Summit Racing Equipment Mid-West Drag Racing Series presented by J&A Service U.S. 131 Nationals.

Oksas picked up his second straight win, one of many highlights of the MWDRS’ second-ever race at the U.S. 131 Motorsports Park in Martin, Mich. Racing in front of a huge crowd, the MWDRS put on a stellar show, with Bill Bernard (Top Alcohol Funny Car), Glenn Butcher (Pat Musi Racing Engines Top Sportsman), Christa Schneider (Race Star Wheels Top Dragster), Ron Muenks (Pro Mod Slammers), Conner Jensen (Summit Racing Pro Jr.) and Josie Wanamaker (Zimmerman Properties Construction Sportsman Jr.) all picking up victories.

DON PRUDHOMME, RICHARD SHUTE NAMED TEXAS MOTORPLEX LEGENDS

Iconic drag racer Don Prudhomme and award-winning drag racing photographer Richard Shute will be recognized as Texas Motorplex Legends during the opening ceremonies of the 36th annual Texas NHRA Fall Nationals. Prudhomme won the Fall Nationals three times including a Funny Car title in 1989, Top Fuel in 1991 and his final professional Top Fuel win was recorded at the 1994 Fall Nationals. Shute has chronicled every Texas NHRA Fall Nationals winner’s circle as part of his 50-year career as one of the sport’s most popular photographers.

“These two legends, Don Prudhomme and Richard Shute, have made an enormous impact on the success of the Texas Motorplex,” said Texas Motorplex owner Billy Meyer. “Prudhomme was one of the first Funny Car drivers to see this facility and he is one of only four drivers to win in Funny Car and Top Fuel at the Fall Nationals. Richard has photographed every significant event and milestone this facility has produced. His eye behind the lens is legendary and it is my honor to celebrate these two amazing people.”

BILLY TORRENCE HELPS SON’S TOP FUEL TITLE QUEST WITH MAPLE GROVE VICTORY

Reminded that he serves a valuable purpose in helping son Steve Torrence stay in command as he strives for a fourth consecutive NHRA Top Fuel championship, Mopar Express Lane Nationals winner Billy Torrence said Sunday, tongue in cheek, “I don’t care too much for the Loser Appreciation program, but you know, we’ll take it.”

Truth is, he was elated to keep final-round opponent Justin Ashley from getting any closer to Steve Torrence in the standings and did some reminding of his own: “Those Capco Boys will outrun you when it comes time.”

FILLING IN FOR HAGAN, TOMMY JOHNSON JR. WINS MAPLE GROVE

The substitute driver looked like the savvy veteran that he is.

Tommy Johnson Jr., filling in for Matt Hagan who is recovering from COVID-19, powered the Don Schumacher Racing nitro Funny Car to the title at the Mopar Express Lane NHRA Nationals presented by Pennzoil Sunday in Reading, Pa.

GREG ANDERSON TIES ALL-TIME NHRA PRO STOCK WIN MARK WITH READING VICTORY

A fun day at Maple Grove ended in celebration for veteran Pro Stock driver Greg Anderson.

Anderson powered his Camaro to the win at the Mopar Express Lane NHRA Nationals presented by Pennzoil Sunday in Reading, Pa., to tie the NHRA all-time Pro Stock victory mark at 97 with his mentor Warren Johnson.

HE’S WILD. HE’S OFFBEAT. BUT STEVE JOHNSON IS BIKE CLASS’ FIRST COUNTDOWN WINNER, NEW POINTS LEADER

Sunday’s four Mopar Express Lane NHRA Nationals winners at Maple Grove Raceway, near Reading, Pa. – Billy Torrence (Top Fuel), Tommy Johnson Jr. (Funny Car), Greg Anderson (Pro Stock), and Steve Johnson (Pro Stock Motorcycle) – received a bottle of champagne.

Torrence, Tommy Johnson, and Anderson sprayed it from the podium in jubilation.

Steve Johnson drank his.

SALINAS IGNORES RUMORS AS HE FORGES AHEAD

Scrappers Racing Top Fuel owner-driver Mike Salinas has been paying no attention to the rumors that seem to be swirling around him at the moment.

One has him leaving the Top Fuel class. (He isn’t.)

The other has tuner Alan Johnson and the entire Brian Husen-led team heading to Kalitta Motorsports next season. (As far as Salinas knows, that’s not true.)

However, Salinas is going to be racing a Pro Mod car, but he doesn’t plan to ditch Top Fuel.
