Tom Thompson has claimed the title of 2024 WDRA Box World Champion, presented by SunCoast Performance. The invitation-only event took place at Montgomery International Dragway, featuring elite competitors from the WDRA member track network.

At 52, Thompson, known as “Lil” Tom, has a long history in drag racing, having learned the sport from his father, who remains his crew chief. Thompson began racing at 14 and is currently in his 38th season, primarily driving a 1992 Foxbody Mustang built by Maddox Race Cars.

This year, he secured his second track championship at Greer Dragway after seven near misses in previous seasons. In his first attempt at a World Championship, Thompson defeated fellow track champions Dereck Patterson, Aaron Shriver, Scott Sanders, and Jared Pennington before earning a bye run to the final.

The championship final featured a door car versus dragster match for a $20,000 prize. Thompson’s .007 reaction time secured him a .035 margin of victory over Ian Woods of London Dragway.

“I had a hell of a good time! I race at Greer Dragway, the best track around, and the toughest competitors,” Thompson said. “That’s why I’m here as the champion today, because of them racers over there.”

After his victory, Thompson took a moment to reflect on his achievement. “I screamed and hollered [at the finish line], but then I was in awe, I couldn’t believe it,” he explained.

Thompson’s championship comes with a $20,000 cash prize, a billet WDRA Rod trophy, and free entry into any WDRA member track event next season. Each champion also received a $1,000 gift certificate from Technocraft Trailer Cabinets and a Contingency Connection Championship Package.

For Thompson, the win symbolizes more than prizes; it honors his family and fellow racers. “I’m so thankful I was able to accomplish this while my dad was there to see it,” he said.

Thompson shared words of encouragement for fellow racers on his podcast, the Fatrabbit and Sticks Show. “I hope this inspires other people who might think, ‘If he can do it, then I can do it too.’”

The automotive shop owner thanked supporters, including his father and family, for their encouragement over the years. He noted, “My dad and my sister, Karen, are my biggest supporters. My girlfriend, Jennifer, and my kids, Hayden and Emma Claire, keep me grounded.”

Thompson appreciated the treatment racers received at the WDRA World Championships and expressed interest in defending his title next season.
