MONDAY FINAL – TEAM FORCE DELIVERS BIG IN DELAYED VEGAS-2 NATIONALS

Brittany Force ended a 39-race winless streak, claiming victory in Top Fuel at the 24th annual Ford Performance NHRA Nationals on Monday, defeating reigning champion Doug Kalitta in the final.

Force clocked a time of 3.703 seconds at 332.54 mph in her Chevrolet dragster, marking her first win since the fall race in Las Vegas in 2022. The victory coincided with her father, John Force, returning to the track after a June crash, adding to the emotional weight of the event.

After qualifying No. 1 and running three times in the 3.60s, Force continued to flash the form that led to a world title two years ago. She defeated Josh Hart, Shawn Reed and Clay Millican to reach the finals and then powered the win in the final round, culminating in an emotional celebration on the top end and a John Force Racing double-up.

“We’ve been piecing this together since the Countdown began and we were seeing this progress with No. 1 qualifiers and going rounds on race day. We knew it was coming,” Force said. “We knew we were closing in on it and we were getting close, and I had a good feeling about Vegas. We’ve been successful here in the past, and it’s one of my favorite tracks on the circuit and my whole family was here. My dad was here. I just had a good feeling about it, and to come here and win, our team needed that. We’ve always stayed positive, always stayed confident, but it does hurt when you go two seasons without winning.

“Having my dad here for the first time since his crash, it wasn’t pressure, it was more heart behind every single person on the team. We always want to come out here and win, but with him being here this weekend, after everything he’s been through, there was definitely more heart behind it. We wanted to get him in that winner’s circle.”

Kalitta advanced to the finals for the sixth time this year and 118th in his career after defeating Ida Zetterstrom, Antron Brown and Shawn Langdon. Justin Ashley remains in the points lead and he’ll take a 44 and 45-point advantage over Brown and Langdon, respectively, into the finale.

Austin Prock secured his eighth win in Funny Car with a run of 3.830 seconds in his Cornwell Tools Chevrolet Camaro SS. Prock, who is on the verge of clinching his first world title, leads his teammate Jack Beckman by 188 points heading into the season finale.

Prock qualified No. 1, breaking Force’s single-season Funny Car record for No. 1 qualifiers, and lived in the 3.80s all weekend, rolling past Tim Gibbons, Cruz Pedregon and Blake Alexander. That set up the matchup with Lee, who was seeking his first career Funny Car win, but Prock and his team made their best run of eliminations, handing Prock his 12th career win.

“It was a long weekend, an odd weekend, for sure, but a great weekend to have John back,” Prock said. “We heard he was coming this weekend, and all you want to do is put a smile on his face, make a good team effort, and we did exactly that. All three of our John Force Racing race cars were on fire this weekend. I won three races before I ever got in this car this year, and now I’ve got eight in one season. It’s pretty crazy.

“The job’s not finished until the [championship] trophy is in our hands and when it gets to my hands, it’s going straight to my dad’s hands, but we’re getting really close, so I’m excited that we won today. We still haven’t won the championship and that’s our main goal this year. When I got in the race car at the beginning of the year, my dad said he wanted to win a world championship and this team has just been lights out this year, outstanding job by each and every one of them.”

Lee advanced to the final round for the second time this year after defeating Steven Densham, Daniel Wilkerson and Beckman.

In Pro Stock, Aaron Stanfield captured his sixth win of the season, defeating Greg Anderson with a holeshot victory, clocking 6.606 seconds at 206.13 mph. Stanfield takes over the points lead, holding a 32-point advantage over Dallas Glenn following Glenn’s early exit from the event.

“When Dallas went out ahead of me in round one and I knew it’s time to time to take advantage of the situation, I missed the tree a little bit and got away with it,” Stanfield said. “I got a little pissed off after that and got my head back together and drove well for the rest of the weekend.

“The pressure meter is maxed out, but pressure is a privilege and I’m not afraid of it. I feel like the majority of the time I do well under pressure, and we did exactly what we needed to do this weekend. We had some luck go our way, and we took advantage of it.”

Anderson advanced to the finals for the fifth time in 2024 and 181st time overall thanks to round wins against Chris McGaha, Camrie Caruso and Cristian Cuadra. Anderson trails Stanfield by 56 points heading into Pomona.

Gaige Herrera, the Pro Stock Motorcycle points leader, secured his 10th victory of the season, defeating Angie Smith with a weekend-best run of 6.798 seconds at 197.16 mph. Herrera heads into the finale at Pomona with a 123-point lead over Matt Smith, positioning himself for a second consecutive championship.

“To run that 6.79 in the final, the bike’s just been on rails. It has been all season, and as long as I do my job, Andrew [Hines, crew chief]and the guys always do their job to a T,” Herrera said. “They’re always about being perfect as possible, which pushes me to do the same.

“If I’m able to win the second championship — and anything can still happen — this one would mean a lot more than the first. I had to earn it a lot more this season. We kind of ran away with it last year, but this year it was definitely a lot tighter racing, and there wasn’t much room for error. It’s going to mean a lot more for sure.”

A. Smith reached the finals for the second time this season and the ninth time in her career after defeating Ryan Oehler, Geno Scali and Chase Van Sant.

The NHRA Mission Foods Drag Racing Series will conclude the 2024 season from Nov. 14-17 at the 59th annual In-N-Out Burger NHRA Finals at Pomona Dragstrip in California.

BROGDON SCORES $100,000 PRIZE FOR WINNING ROOFTEC LAS VEGAS COMP CASH CLASH

Rodger Brogdon got a return on his investment Saturday in Las Vegas at the Ford Performance NHRA Nationals.

Brogdon, whose RoofTec brand is the largest roofer in Houston, Texas, took home $100,000 as the winner of the inaugural RoofTec Las Vegas Cash Clash, beating Taylor Chomiski in the final round. The $175,000-plus, 16-car shootout featured the top racers on the RoofTec Competition Eliminator Bonus Fund series.

Brogdon, who drives a B/Altered Planetary Camaro, surrendered nearly a full second of a headstart to Chomiski’s C/Super Modified. He was able to cut into the handicap significantly with a nearly .05 starting line advantage.

Brogdon took the win-light with a 7.185 elapsed time, -,545 under his index.

Brogdon made a vow three years ago that he would put his money where his mouth was in proving NHRA’s Competition Eliminator is one of the best divisions in drag racing. In the end, Brogdon created a monster of a class to try and win.

“This was nerve-racking and really, really tough, but very fortunate,” Brogdon said. “Came out good, and all in all, it was a great day. I’m so happy to be here, I’m so happy to race this class, and I love all these guys who spend so many hours trying to compete in this class. It’s really amazing at the effort people will do for something they truly love, and I really appreciate all the comp racers across the country.”

Brogdon only had to win four rounds, but every one of his RoofTec Competition Eliminator Bonus Fund races since 2022 has required every winner to score five round wins.

SATURDAY – AUSTIN PROCK BREAKS BOSSMAN’S #1 QUALIFIER RECORD WITH NO. 14; FORCE, ANDERSON, HERRERA CLAIM TOP SPOTS

Austin Prock set a new record for the most No. 1 qualifiers in a single season, earning his 14th top spot at the Ford Performance NHRA Nationals. Prock broke John Force’s previous record while driving his Chevrolet Camaro SS.

Brittany Force (Top Fuel), Greg Anderson (Pro Stock), and Gaige Herrera (Pro Stock Motorcycle) also secured the No. 1 qualifying positions at this 19th race of the 2024 NHRA season. Prock clocked a run of 3.817 seconds at 327.98 mph, narrowly missing a track elapsed time record.

With seven wins this season, Prock will begin eliminations against Tim Gibbons on Sunday, holding a 148-point lead over Jack Beckman. If he finishes three rounds ahead of Beckman, Prock can clinch his first Funny Car championship.

“It’s really special for the team, my dad, Thomas, and Nate Hildahl have been doing a great job,” Prock said. “I don’t really feel it’s fair that I get all the glory. Those are the guys that made it happen. They gave me a great race car to drive all 14 of those races, and I’m really happy to get the job done for them.

“We have a great car. We have one of the best cars on the property right now, and we have a potential to do really good tomorrow. The job’s not finished. We’re close, but there’s a long ways to go, so we just have to keep fighting. I’ve been driving really good this weekend and they’ve been doing a great job tuning so we just got to do that tomorrow.”

Beckman qualified second with a career-best time of 3.821 seconds, while Paul Lee followed in third at 3.845 seconds.

Brittany Force’s impressive run of 3.660 seconds at 334.98 mph secured her fifth top qualifying spot of the season. She faces Josh Hart in the first round as she seeks her first win since 2022.

“David Grubnic, John Collins, this entire Chevrolet team we’re very happy with our performance this weekend,” Force said. “We qualified No. 1 and three out of the four runs we got down there in the .60s, so that’s pretty outstanding. That’s what our team used to do, so we’re definitely getting back to our older team.

“After not getting this team to a winner’s circle, now two years, and to do it here at a racetrack where we’ve had success, would be great. I have a lot of good memories here, not just wins, but No. 1 qualifiers, watching my sisters win here, my dad win here, so to get a win here, that’s what we’re chasing now. We’ve been chasing a win all season long. We have two races left our team. All we want to do is get to that winner’s circle. My dad’s here this weekend, so I know we’re all fighting for that.”

Shawn Langdon qualified second with a 3.672 at 328.30 in the final session under the lights, while defending world champion Doug Kalitta made a big move in the fourth session, qualifying third with a 3.674 at 334.57. Points leader Justin Ashley qualified seventh and will take a 44-point lead into raceday over Antron Brown and a 65-point advantage over Langdon, who gained 11 points in qualifying.

In Pro Stock, Greg Anderson topped the field with a time of 6.596 seconds in his HendrickCars.com Chevrolet Camaro. He will open against Chris McGaha, aiming for his first win since April.

“We made three great runs before the last one so my race car in on point,” Anderson said. “Tomorrow is going to be a hell of a battle. This late in the year the intensity is ratcheted up and by the end of the day, my season will either be alive or over. I like pressure. I live for these moments and I need four 20-point rounds tomorrow to stay in this. When I wake up, I hope I feel like an 18-year old kid and I hope I drive like one.

“It’s so much tougher to win now. There are 16 cars qualified and it wouldn’t be a shock to see any of them win. Right now, [the competition] is the best it’s ever been and it’s great to be a part of it.”

David Cuadra secured the second spot with a run of 6.605 at 206.51 and Stanfield took third after a run of 6.609 at 205.66. Points leader Glenn qualified fifth.

Gaige Herrera led the Pro Stock Motorcycle category with a run of 6.813 seconds on his Suzuki. He faces Kahea Woods in eliminations, holding a 63-point lead over Matt Smith.

“We struggled a bit yesterday with an engine malfunction in Q2, so when we came out this morning and ran 6.81 I was a little shocked,” Herrera said. “That run actually felt slow. We did score some little [qualifying] points. We gained one point on Matt and that’s big.

“We always say we don’t count points and I try not to take it too seriously but at the end of the day, we all want that grand prize. It’s hard to block out but your do your best. I’ve been enjoying this year a lot more than last. I’m trying to have fun and the championship is a bonus at the end of it.”

Eliminations for the event begin at 11 a.m. PT on Sunday.

FRIDAY RESULTS – JOHN FORCE RACING’S DRIVERS PROVIDE THE BEST MEDICINE FOR THE BOSS IN VEGAS

Brittany Force and Austin Prock secured provisional No. 1 positions in Top Fuel and Funny Car at the Ford Performance NHRA Nationals at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Their performances came on the same day that John Force returned to racing for the first time since his crash in June.

Greg Anderson (Pro Stock) and Matt Smith (Pro Stock Motorcycle) also lead their respectable divisions.

Force powered her Chevrolet Accessories dragster to a time of 3.675 seconds at 336.74 mph, aiming for her fifth No. 1 qualifier of the season and the 51st of her career.

“Coming into this weekend, we knew it was going to be special because my dad had planned to come out, and I think everyone was really looking forward to seeing him, especially me,” B. Force said. “I’m so excited for him. I think it’s great for him. This is just the best medicine for him.

“We’re always excited to come back to Las Vegas, where we’ve had so much success in the past. We’re really looking to close out the season strong and get into the winner’s circle for our sponsors.”

Shawn Langdon currently ranks second with a run of 3.706 seconds, followed closely by reigning world champion Doug Kalitta at 3.707 seconds.

In Funny Car, Prock recorded a pace-setting time of 3.843 seconds at 333.33 mph in his Camaro SS. He held a substantial 147-point lead over teammate Jack Beckman, who ran 3.859 seconds alongside him during the session.

Should Prock, who held a commanding 147-point lead over Beckman heading into the weekend, qualify No. 1, he would break J. Force’s single-season record with his 14th No. 1 spot.

“That was a great way to welcome him back,” Prock said. “All three John Force Racing cars made tremendous runs, and it was a good way to say, ‘Welcome back, boss.’ It’s just nice to have John back at the racetrack for the first time since Richmond. I’m glad that he’s back. I wanted to cry when I saw him this morning.

“That first run was really stout, obviously low of the session. We’ve got two more shots at it tomorrow, and conditions are going to be probably better. I don’t believe that 3.84 will hold. I think we’re going to have to improve on that.”

Following Beckman, Ron Capps secured the third position with a time of 3.860 seconds.

Anderson claimed the provisional No. 1 position in Pro Stock
with a run of 6.597 seconds at 207.02 mph in his HendrickCars.com Chevrolet Camaro.

Anderson, who is third overall in points, emphasized the necessity of winning this race to stay competitive for the championship.

“Without a doubt, I need to win this race,” Anderson said. “That’s all I can do at this point. Even if I do win the last two races, that might not be enough to get [the championship] done. Our plan is to set the ladder up so it’s favorable, but there is no happy spot on a Pro Stock ladder. At least I still have a shot, and that’s all you can ask for.

“Things could change if I drop the ball. If that happens, I’ll do everything I can to help Dallas with the championship. I’ll do what’s best for the KB Titan team. That pole is not safe. The conditions figure to be a little better tomorrow, and it’s supposed to be overcast, so it’s not safe.”

David Cuadra is currently in second place with a time of 6.605 seconds, while Aaron Stanfield holds third at 6.609 seconds. Dallas Glenn sits in fourth, having run 6.615 seconds.

Matt Smith achieved the best time in both Pro Stock Motorcycle qualifying sessions, clocking in at 6.822 seconds at 198.70 mph on his Denso Auto Parts/Matt Smith Racing Buell. Smith, now 58 points behind leader Gaige Herrera, described the weekend as a must-win situation.

“Our mindset this weekend is to just have no bad luck because we’ve had a lot of it lately,” Smith said. “In Reading, I had a bad fuel pump, and then in St. Louis, we lost a crank trigger, and in Dallas, the bike wouldn’t shift. Those are three races we should have won, and that would have been 60 points. We should be leading right now, so I’m not asking for good luck. I just don’t want any more bad luck.

“We never quit. I know that I’m No. 2, and we’ve got the second-best bike, but we’re still in this. I do see this race as must win unless Gaige has some bad luck, which hasn’t happened yet.”

Currently, Herrera is second with a run of 6.846 seconds, while Angie Smith rounds out the top three with a time of 6.850 seconds.

Qualifying continues at 12:30 p.m. PT on Saturday at the Ford Performance NHRA Nationals.

THURSDAY – INDEXES FLY OUT THE WINDOW WHEN THERE’S $100,000 ON THE LINE FOR VEGAS CASH CLASH

The competition in the first rounds of the RoofTec Las Vegas Comp Clash was heated, but at the end of the day, Mother Nature had a chilling effect at the Ford Performance NHRA Nationals. A tree malfunction in the second pair of the quarter-finals and a plummeting temperature left NHRA officials with no other choice but to postpone Thursday’s competition at the Ford Performance NHRA Nationals until Friday.

Taylor Chomiski opened the second round by taking out David Triplett, and a tree malfunction in the race between Scott Linder and David Treadwell ended the day, as the remaining temperature in the track fell into unsafe conditions. The match between Linder and Treadwell will be rerun on Friday, along with the matches of Joe Mozeris vs. Clint Neff and Rodger Brogdon vs. Adam Hickey. The Chomiski and Triplett race will also be rerun.

Thursday’s action featured two rounds of competition and the first round provided an epic display of blistered indexes, and while there were no personal penalties, there was the CIC in full effect.

The most significant infraction in the first round belonged to Chomiski, as he ran an 8.24, -.70 under the C/Super Modified index to take out No. 1 seed Don Thomas.

Others taking CIC hits in the opening round included Clint Neff -.654 (Chase Williams), Scott Linder -.633 (Jason Grima), Glen Treadwell -.615 (Kayla Mozeris), David Triplett -.571 (Melissa Murphy), Joe Mozeris -.532 (Rick Brown), Adam Hickey -.520 (Cali Neff).

The only clean index after the first round belonged to Brogdon, who was able to ease through the lights when Ashton Hudson fouled.

Race Officials pushed the completion of the three remaining rounds over to Friday.

Other sportsman low qualifiers included Clint Neff (Competition Eliminator), Craig Gualtiere (Super Stock), and Debbie Hewes (Stock). The Super divisions completed their first round, with Tanner Theobald (Super Comp) and Kristi Shipp (Super Gas) winning.

2024 NHRA NATIONALS – LAS VEGAS-2 RESULTS
