NHRA Sportsman competitors who leave a national event disappointed may now have something positive to look forward to thanks to a new partnership between NHRA and ARP aimed at rewarding perseverance rather than victory.
The organizations have introduced the ARP Bad Luck Program, a new initiative for racers competing in the Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series. The program debuted last month at the Maryland national event and will continue at every NHRA national event throughout the sanctioning body’s 75th anniversary season in 2026.
Unlike traditional contingency programs that reward race winners and finalists, the Bad Luck Program focuses on competitors whose weekends unravel through circumstances often beyond their control.
Each national event, ARP will recognize one racer in every Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series category who experiences significant misfortune during the weekend. Eligible situations could range from losing on an exceptional reaction-time package or a heartbreaking .001-second red-light start to mechanical failures involving a race car or even problems with a tow vehicle or trailer.
The concept represents a different approach to contingency awards, acknowledging that success in drag racing is often measured by more than a win light.
ARP officials say the goal is to recognize racers who support the company throughout the season, regardless of where they finish on the elimination ladder.
“The ‘Bad Luck Bonus’ is ARP trying to take care of everyone,” ARP’s Rick Feaster said. “Contingency is generally taking care of the winners and runners-up. We would like to take care of racers, win or lose. Many racers display decals without getting anything back. We recognize you’re doing your part by flying our decal. We sincerely thank all of you.”
Contingency awards have long been a staple of Sportsman racing, but most programs require competitors to reach the final round before receiving any financial benefit. The ARP initiative provides another avenue for racers to receive recognition during weekends when the results don’t go their way.
ARP’s Bad Luck Program will remain in effect throughout the 2026 season.
