FAB SHOP'S NEW DOOR CAR HEADER

The Fab Shop Now Offers a Shelf SBC Door Car Header

tcdcsbc_picThe Fab Shop, a company that is quickly becoming recognized as the premier header manufacturer in sportsman drag racing, is pleased to announce the addition of an off the shelf SBC Door Car header to their line of drag racing products.  This header offers a host of unique features and ideas, combined with the quality workmanship racers across the globe have come to expect from The Fab Shop.  Like all other Fab Shop products, they’re FAST to boot.

The design team at The Fab Shop worked for years with leading engine builders and Pro Stock competitors in Australia (the current hot bed for SBC drag racing development) to produce a header that not only met the high horsepower needs of these racers, but also fit the vast majority of chassis/strut cars available.  In addition, the engineers at The Fab Shop were able to use CAD programming to develop a multi-purpose flange, tube layout, and bolt pattern design.  The result is an essentially universal SBC header.  The new Fab Shop SBC Door Car header will fit any Stahl pattern head, the BRODIX spread-port, 18* GM Heads, 15* All Pro Heads, and others.  This design allows flexibility without any tube overlap of the exhaust ports and offer sufficient clearance for down injector nozzles.  By incorporating a universal flange, The Fab Shop not only offers a header for racers to utilize on various applications, it also allows the company to price the unit very affordably.

These SBC Headers have been designed with a 2” – 2 1/8” step for maximum performance and to clear the steering shaft on most tube chassis applications.  The design of the headers helps maintain maximum turning radius while pointing the collectors at the collector box on virtually all popular tube chassis door cars.

The Fab Shop has developed a reputation for creating the most powerful headers on the market today.  Regardless of your application, The Fab Shop is confident they can provide a performance advantage over any comparably priced header on the market.  In addition to the powerful and universal advantages to these new Fab Shop SBC Headers, like any other Fab Shop product, the workmanship is second to none, as each Fab Shop header is a beautifully prepared work of art.

These SBC Door Car Headers come standard with “Real” merge collectors that are custom sized to maximize power in sportsman competition vehicles.  Each unit also comes standard with NitroPlate coatings and the most rugged collector tabs on the market.  Chrome finishing is also available, as are various EGT and O2 sensor fittings.  Call for details and more information.

LIGHTWEIGHT TENSILEMAX & H-13 TOOL STEEL SPRING RETAINERS FROM MANLEY

The valve train experts at Manley Performance have developed two special steel alloy valve spring retainers that are almost as light as titanium, but with greater manleyresistance to wear. They are also great for racing applications where titanium valve train components are not permitted.

For Super 7° applications Manley offers retainers for double valve springs made of proprietary TensileMax™ alloy. These are available in standard, convoluted, and double convoluted designs—which are comparable weight-wise to standard titanium retainers. The material is specially heat-treated to provide a hardness of Rc 52-54 to prevent retainer wear. A unique impingement process improves fatigue strength and promotes an oil film between the spring and retainer.

Applications utilizing a 10° keeper angle are handled with Manley’s new lightweight H-13 tool steel retainers. They are 33% lighter than standard 10° steel retainers and only 2-4 grams heavier than titanium versions. They are heat-treated to a Rockwell hardness of 56.

Manley manufactures both steel and titanium valve locks in 7°, Super 7° and 10° configurations, as well as a variety of steel and titanium valve spring retainers.

NEW RAM DUAL-DISC CLUTCH ASSEMBLY FOR ’11 MUSTANG GT 5.0

Perhaps the greatest news for the 2011 Mustang GT was the introduction of the 5.0-liter modular engine and the switch from a Tremec to a Getrag 5-speed ram_clutchmanual transmission. To that end, RAM now offers their Force 9.5 and Force 10.5 dual-disc high performance clutch assemblies, along with single-disc sets from HDX to Powergrip HD. In addition Ram has also made available new billet aluminum and steel flywheels for Ford’s new GT. These new parts mitigate pressure plate troubles at high engine speeds.

Ram developed its 5.0-liter GT clutch packages because of an engagement problem that occurs on low-mileage, early-production 2011 GTs (built prior to April 25, 2010). Though the clutch disengages at high engine speeds, 6,000 rpm or more, centrifugal forces prevent it from re-engaging, unless engine speeds are reduced. As a result gear changes at high engine speeds are awkward if not impossible.

RAM, having already experienced similar centrifugal troubles with GM flat diaphragm clutches during the 60s and 70s, adapted a high-cone cover assembly for their new RAM Force dual-disc set-up. This technique prevents the clutch cover fingers from traveling over center. The new Ram Force assembly provides a torque capacity of 800 lb-ft and comprises pressure plate, dual-clutch discs, Blanchard-ground steel floater plate between them, and an aluminum flywheel (the OEM flywheel cannot be re-used).

In common with the other Force 9.5 dual-disc units, this assembly is compact and light, contributing to faster acceleration and deceleration. Moreover, it operates quietly, requires pedal pressure no greater than that of the OE part, and as with other Ram dual-disc assemblies, this unit is engineered to fit properly within the confines of the factory bell housing and operate with the factory release bearing. To ensure ample holding power and superb drivability without chatter on initial clutch release, Ram outfits both friction plates with their 300 series organic linings.

Reassembly time by an experienced tech consumes approximately two hours.

PROJECT WHITE WAGON: A REAL CLUTCH PLAYER

The sound of a 1970s era Modified car was very distinguishable.
10_12_2010_wagon_clutch
A rap of the throttle elicited a high-pitched sound of horsepower much like dialing an old style rotary telephone. Just like it took seven revolutions on the old phone to make a local call, the process of bringing the stick-shifted, screaming small blocks up to peak rpm took at least three to four good raps of the throttle. At least that’s what worked well for old Fulton Competition small blocks running in the Modified and Super Stock divisions.

The melody of a heavy flywheel-inspired car is a thing of the past. Today’s modern stick shift sportsman car is all about being light, efficient and repeatable.

With that said, we’ll be implementing a double-disc, eight-inch clutch from Ram Clutches to work in conjunction with our Liberty five-speed transmission.

Pat Norcia, a proven expert in clutch technology, has assisted us in finding the right combination to propel our 3,350-pound wagon to the finish line with the same efficiency as the mountain motor Pro Stockers he works with.

350+ NEW CAMSHAFTS FROM CRANE CAMS

new_cc2_087Crane Cams has developed over 350 new camshaft profiles for 2011. These include highly effective new roller cam designs for the fast-growing LS-series of engines from GM,  as well as economical flat tappet grinds that range from mild torque-producing profiles to radical-sounding grinds with nasty idle characteristics.

The new designs are part of Crane’s industry-leading database, which includes in excess of 80,000 profiles. As with all other Crane products, they are proudly made in the USA.

Complimenting the new cam profiles are a compendium of optimized valve train components, including lifters, valve springs, retainers, valve locks and pushrods.

Detailed information can be found in Crane’s massive new 436-page catalog—which can be downloaded immediately from the company’s newly-revamped website www.CraneCams.com.

A printed “hard copy” of the catalog is available and can be ordered online.

INFINITY OVER ZERO, TOP FUEL WORMHOLE GO ELECTRIC, SAVE THE PLANET

I/0, Top Fuel Wormhole now available on Amazon Kindle

topfuelwormholeinfinity-over-zeroIn what is arguably a drag-strip journalism first, both Cole Coonce’s Top Fuel Wormhole (his collection of drag racing essays), and its predecessor, Infinity Over Zero (an impressionistic history of the Land Speed Record), have both gone electric. Which is to say these may or may not be the first books on the topics to have a presence on Amazon.com’s Kindle store, but, arguably, these are the first essential ones.

With new, paper-less versions of both of Coonce’s rocket-fueled books now specially formatted for e-readers, modern motor-sports esthetes can download these delicious digital documents and enjoy them with the knowledge that the trees spared by the lack of pulp-processing  can now serve as emissions credits for burning rubber and fouling spark plugs.

To that end, K-Bomb Publishing, the imprint that produced both the electric and paper versions of these thick tomes, encourages all consumers to brandish their Kindles at the drag races and, as the next pair of monopropellant-powered Funny Cars blasts by, exclaim to anybody who can hear over the noise that with enough pulp-free purchases of Top Fuel Wormhole, drag racing could ultimately be considered carbon neutral.

Indeed, with an electronic acquisition of Top Fuel Wormhole, the drag-racing reader can enjoy Coonce’s exhaustive essays on San Fernando Raceway, Arley Langlo, Lions Drag Strip, “Wild Willie” Borsch, “Big Daddy” Don Garlits, Shirley Muldowney, “Jocko” Johnson, Blaine Johnson, the “Surfers,” Tony Pedregon, Mendy Fry, John Force, Danica Patrick and others, guilt-free! A similar, relaxed experience is available with the e-consumption of Infinity Over Zero, which recounts Andy Green’s smashing of both the Land Speed Record and the actual Sound Barrier in a jet-powered car, and explores the intrepid exploits of other fearless land-speed racers such as John Cobb, Mickey Thompson, Glen Leasher, Craig Breedlove, Art Arfons, Gary Gabelich and more.

These thorough, stout books are available for wireless auto-delivery to one’s e-reader for the nice prices of $6.95 (Infinity) and $7.95 (Top Fuel Wormhole).

And for old-school consumers, hard copies of both Wormhole and Infinity Over Zero can still be purchased, of course, at Amazon and elsewhere. But that’s hardly cool these day, is it?
