It was supposed to be a major event to set the stage for the rejuvenated IHRA’s big coming out.

Word comes today this event will not happen, at least in 2025.

The International Hot Rod Association (IHRA) and Maryland International Raceway (MIR) have jointly announced the cancellation of The President’s Cup Nationals, originally scheduled for August 8-9. The decision comes in light of multiple factors, including IHRA’s access to content and time constraints.

Though the statement was posted on MIR’s Facebook, it never appeared on the IHRA’s website or its Facebook.

According to the announcement, both entities agreed that it was in their best interest to forgo the event, with MIR stating that they would soon reveal plans for replacement events. The cancellation follows recent controversies surrounding the proposed acquisition of the racetrack by IHRA, which initially generated excitement among fans and stakeholders.

Earlier this year, IHRA’s March 9 announcement of a letter of intent to purchase MIR was met with skepticism. Sources close to the situation confirmed that the premature declaration created uncertainty within the drag racing community, and a denial from MIR management that a sale had taken place.

This news follows major controversial moves, including the IHRA’s removal of key executives, CEO Christian Byrd and President Rich Schaeffer, and the resignation of Alan Reinhart, the series’ Vice President of Race Operations.
