NHRA officials pushed back Saturday gate opening to noon after heavy overnight and morning rain impacted South Georgia Motorsports Park ahead of the Southern Nationals.
Fans were asked not to arrive before 12 p.m. ET as track workers and NHRA staff continued efforts to prepare the facility for racing operations.
Portions of the pit area absorbed significant rainfall overnight, creating cleanup and safety concerns before spectators and race teams could move freely through the grounds.
The delay marked the first major weather challenge for NHRA’s debut national event at the Cecil, Ga., facility. Track crews immediately shifted focus to restoring pit access, drying surfaces and assessing runoff areas.
Friday, however, delivered headline moments before weather changed the weekend outlook. Two professional qualifying sessions were completed, giving teams a full day of data and fans a glimpse of what the new venue can produce.
Top Fuel driver Shawn Langdon stole attention Friday with a 3.724-second pass at 345.00 mph, the fastest speed in NHRA history. The run placed Langdon atop the provisional order and added another milestone to the opening weekend.
In Funny Car, J.R. Todd moved into the provisional No. 1 spot, while Greg Anderson led Pro Stock and Matt Smith paced Pro Stock Motorcycle entering Saturday.
