The PDRA saw a window and went for it in true drag racing spirit, but in the end, Mother Nature quickly closed the window that barely opened.
On a weekend where IHRA preemptively postponed the Triple Crown opener at Maple Grove Raceway, NHRA shifted its SPORTSnationals events to later dates, and weather concerns stretched across motorsports with the Indianapolis 500 and Coca-Cola 600 facing uncertain skies, weather may have put together the strongest run of the weekend.
PDRA officials tried to race anyway.
The series adjusted schedules and looked for an opening at Virginia Motorsports Park. Racers and teams arrived with the same approach they have always carried into uncertain weekends — if there was a chance to race, they were going to take it.
But forecasts kept getting worse.
Persistent rain and heavy mist eventually forced officials to cancel the Mid-Atlantic Showdown, the third of seven events on the 2026 PDRA schedule. The event will not be rescheduled.
“Due to constant heavy mist this morning and rain returning to the hourly forecast for Friday, continuing worsening conditions for Saturday and Sunday, the Mid-Atlantic Showdown is officially cancelled,” PDRA Series Director Tyler Crossnoe said. “We are sorry for the decision and we hate that we could not complete the event this weekend.”
Series officials announced that race entries, crew passes, racer motorhome spaces and pit parking purchases will roll over to a future event later this season. Spectator tickets purchased online will be refunded.
The cancellation removes one stop from a seven-race schedule and sends teams toward the next event without a chance to make up the lost weekend.
The PDRA season now moves to the North vs. South Shootout at Maryland International Raceway on June 25-27.
