When Bristol Dragway created the Legends of Thunder Valley Hall of Fame, the goal was to recognize the people whose accomplishments became inseparable from the facility’s history.
Few drivers fit that description better than Ron Capps.
The three-time NHRA Funny Car world champion was inducted into the Legends of Thunder Valley during the Thunder Valley Nationals, becoming just the third active participant to receive the honor. He joins John Force and Tony Schumacher as the only competitors still racing full-time when their names were added to the Hall of Fame.
For a driver whose history with Bristol spans four decades, the recognition felt less like a surprise and more like an acknowledgment of what had already been established.
Capps has won eight Funny Car races at Bristol Dragway, more than any other driver in category history. His victories came in 2001, 2006, 2012, 2017, 2018, 2022, 2023 and 2025.
The list becomes even more impressive when viewed in context.
Drivers often find success at a track with one particular combination, one crew chief or one team owner. Capps won at Bristol driving for Don Prudhomme, won there driving for Don Schumacher and continued winning after becoming a team owner himself.
The surroundings changed. but the results rarely did. Along the way, Capps added a runner-up finish in 2015, earned a No. 1 qualifying position in 2016 and established the Bristol elapsed-time record of 3.884 seconds. The record has stood for nearly a decade. That’s the kind of consistency that doesn’t happen by accident.
It also explains why his name now sits alongside some of the most influential figures in drag racing history.
The Legends of Thunder Valley Hall of Fame includes names such as Don Prudhomme, Don Garlits, Connie Kalitta, Shirley Muldowney, Warren Johnson, Tony Schumacher and Del Worsham. Each helped shape the sport in a different way.
Capps earned his place through longevity, performance and an ability to remain relevant across multiple eras of Funny Car competition. At age 60, he continues to compete at a championship level while serving as one of the sport’s most recognizable ambassadors. His résumé extends well beyond Bristol.
Capps owns three Funny Car world championships and 79 career victories. He has recorded career-best performances of 3.821 seconds and 339.28 mph while building a Hall of Fame career that spans more than three decades.
Yet Bristol occupies a unique place in that story.
Thunder Valley has always demanded something different from drivers. The towering grandstands, the natural amphitheater setting and the intensity generated by packed crowds create an atmosphere unlike any other stop on the NHRA tour.
Some drivers spend years trying to figure it out. Capps mastered it. The induction recognizes more than victories. It recognizes a relationship between a driver and a racetrack that produced memorable moments for generations of fans.
That’s why Bristol Motor Speedway and Dragway President Jerry Caldwell believes Capps belongs among the facility’s legends.
“Ron has put fans on their feet at the Thunder Valley Nationals cheering him on for decades and has found a way to Winner’s Circle here on many occasions,” Caldwell said.
“Ron has done it all at Bristol, including winning races, earning No. 1 qualifying positions, setting track performance records and he’s done it all with a big smile on his face the whole time.”
“Not only is Ron one of the sport’s greatest champions, but he’s also one of its most dynamic ambassadors and we are thrilled to recognize and induct him today as the 2026 Legend of Thunder Valley honoree.”
