The Southeast Gassers Association isn’t just returning to Greer Dragway this weekend. It’s going back to where Quain Stott started the whole thing.
SEGA returns to the Upstate South Carolina track Sept. 11-12 for The Return, presented by MAHLE Motorsports, marking its first race at Greer in 10 years.
Long before SEGA became one of nostalgia drag racing’s most recognizable organizations, Stott was building his vision at Greer. He wanted to recreate 1960s gasser racing and wasn’t interested in bending the rules to make participation easier.
The result became arguably the strictest period-correct gasser series in drag racing. Cars are expected to look, sound and operate like their 1960s counterparts, with manual transmissions, high-winding engines and drivers pulling the gears themselves.
Greer Dragway was there at the beginning.
But plenty has changed since SEGA last raced there in 2016, including who owns the series. Stott sold SEGA to longtime competitor and multi-time champion Leslie Horne on Nov. 25, 2023, ending his 12-year run as owner.
Horne has kept the foundation Stott established while taking SEGA into its next era. The organization’s current rules still describe its standards as the strictest in nostalgia drag racing.
So when SEGA rolls through Greer’s gates this weekend, it’ll be the first time under Horne’s ownership.
Saturday’s race is the seventh stop of the 2026 championship season and closes a Carolina swing through Rockingham, Farmington and Greer.
Greg Porter was an A/Gas finalist the last time SEGA raced at Greer. After time away from the series, Porter returned in 2026 with his Night Stalker 1955 Chevrolet and gets another shot at his hometown track, just down the road from his Highway 123 Speed Shop.
Ernie Smith has an even better memory of 2016. He won C/Gas that day, and remarkably, it remains his most recent SEGA victory. More than 100 series starts later, SEGA’s Ironman returns with his Saturday Night Special Chevy II looking to do it again.
Friday’s SEGA-only test-and-tune begins at 6 p.m. Saturday qualifying starts at 1 p.m., followed by championship eliminations.
