Stop us if you’ve heard this one before. We’re hearing the IHRA has been sold again, and from what we’ve been told, the buyer isn’t exactly a stranger to the organization.
Considering what happened under Darryl Cuttell, buying the IHRA might not be everyone’s idea of a sound business investment. But our sources tell us a Northeastern businessman has purchased the sanctioning body, reportedly with plans to bring back the IHRA many of us remember.
The name hasn’t surfaced yet, but we’ve been given a couple of clues. He previously owned an IHRA-affiliated dragstrip, so this isn’t someone who needs a history lesson on the sanctioning body or what it once meant to drag racing.
And before everyone starts playing detective, we’ll save you some trouble. We’re told it’s not Bill Bader Jr.
For those who have somehow forgotten, Cuttell purchased the IHRA in December 2024 and immediately started talking about buying racetracks, paying enormous purses and building a professional racing program that would turn heads. Instead, executives came and went, races disappeared from the schedule, and racers were left asking questions about money.
