Sonny Leonard has built an 892-incher and it’s a beast …
The person responsible for coining the phrase bigger isn’t always
better obviously didn’t see what master mountain motor engine builder
Sonny Leonard did today.
Leonard, who owns and operates Sonny’s Race Engines in Lynchburg, Va.,
just finished running the largest displacement engine he’s ever put on
his engine dynamometer.

The person responsible for coining the phrase bigger isn’t always better obviously didn’t see what master mountain motor engine builder Sonny Leonard did today.
Leonard, who owns and operates Sonny’s Race Engines in Lynchburg, Va., just finished running the largest displacement engine he’s ever put on his engine dynamometer.
This horsepower-laden beast tipped the measuring stick at 892-cubic inches. It features 5.300 bore spacing with a set of Sonny’s GM Hemispherical heads. The bore is 5.080 and stroke measures 5.500.
“First engine that I know of, internal combustion, naturally aspirated that I know of for an automotive V-8 application to measure over 2,000 horsepower,” Leonard explained. “The closest thing I can think of would be an IHRA mountain motor Pro Stock engine.”
A mountain motor Pro Stock engine displaces in the neighborhood of 820-cubic inches and commands as much as 1925 horsepower.
Leonard’s 892-inch behemoth reportedly blasted out 2058 horsepower with 1,440-pounds of foot-torque.
If you’re wondering what applications a beast such as this can fit into, try the Outlaw Quick Eight events as well as Top Sportsman/Top Dragster applications and there’s always match racing.
“I believe if you put one of these engines in a 2400-pound Pro Stocker and run it at sea level, this should run close to a 6.13 at 230 miles per hour. Of course you’d have to change the gear and put a bigger tire on it too.”
