If you knew Roger Richards, then you had a friend for life.
The veteran photographer, who was instrumental in ushering in the digital age of photography in drag racing through CompetitionPlus.com, had an infectious personality. He was as kind-hearted to the average drag racing fan as he was to a multi-time champion. Roger never met a stranger.
Drag racing fans were blessed to have him for 25 years, during which time he cemented his legend in the sport. On June 24, 2024, Roger passed away leaving legions of drag racing fans broken-hearted.
Word comes to us through his daughter, Lisa Richards, that a memorial service has been planned for Sunday, September 22, 2024, from 2-5 PM, at Greer Dragway in Greer, SC, so race fans and the community can pay their respects.
“We would also like to invite anyone who is willing to bring their cars and rigs to give it a ‘hanging out in the pits’ feel,” Lisa said. “I know Dad would have loved that.”
Track owner Mike Greer said that attendees who bring in a rig or race car once their previously scheduled event ends on Saturday are welcome to come in and set up.
The track will also open early on Sunday morning.
“People can just stop by for a few minutes, or they can hang out with us for the entire time,” Lisa added. “We will have an area set up to display many of his photos and some personal items that reflect him and his personality.”
Those in attendance will have an opportunity to speak at the event and share any stories. Roger’s stellar relationship with Mother Nature means the event will be held rain or shine. His family will be in attendance as well.
Roger, a proud patriot, was a military veteran, and at 4:30 PM, a military honors presentation is scheduled.
More details, such as livestreams and media coverage, will be announced closer to the event.
