Chris Powers drove his Sonny’s Racing Engines Chevy Camaro to victory at the NHRA New England Nationals on Sunday. This race marked the second of eight in the 2025 NHRA schedule for Mountain Motor Pro Stock.
In the final round, Powers faced defending world champion Johnny Pluchino, who encountered issues at the starting line and had to shut off his Ford. Powers completed a solo run in 6.723 seconds at 223.47 mph, earning his first career win in Mountain Motor Pro Stock.
“I’m so happy, especially for Sonny’s, you know, since the passing of Leonard Sonny in 2021, they lost a lot of customers,” Powers said. “But man, they worked their tail off on this engine, all winter long to catch up after last year.”
Powers, the No. 1 qualifier, had a bye run in the first round when Jerry Tucker’s Chevy was unable to compete due to a qualifying break. He marked an impressive 6.234-second pass at 225.22 mph.
In the second round, Powers faced former Pro Stock star Vincent Nobile and gained the starting line advantage. He finished with a time of 6.267 seconds at 224.43 mph, defeating Nobile’s 6.288 at 223.80.
Pluchino reached the finals by defeating Dennis Firkus in the first round and John Montecalvo in the semifinals. His first-round time was 6.282 seconds, while his semifinal run clocked in at 6.241 seconds.
The Mountain Motor Pro Stock series moves to Bristol Dragway next week for the NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals from June 6-8.
