Plymouth introduced its Duster two-door coupe in 1970, as the successor to the successful Valiant line. The Duster was built on the Valiant platform and shared the same front end sheet metal, but featured a different design from the cowl back.
Mopar positioned the Duster to compete with the Ford Maverick, AMC Hornet and Chevrolet Nova.
