Former NHRA Pro Stock national record holder Kevin Rotty, a perennial top 10 finisher in the late 1970s, died Jan. 3. He was 67.

Rotty, who campaigned big-block Chevy Camaro entries out of his Tucson, Ariz., base from 1973 through the early 1980s, enjoyed his most spectacular outing at the 1980 Winternationals, where he qualified No. 1 with an 8.49 and set the national speed record at 161.57 mph. Rotty’s spectacular weekend ended one round short of perfection when he was defeated in the final round by Lee Shepherd.

Rotty, who prior to his Pro Stock career had competed in AHRA’s GT-1 class, finished in the NHRA Pro Stock top 10 fives times, including a career-high fourth in 1980.

Rotty is survived by his wife, Mari, and children, Krystal, Jesus, and Jacob.

A celebration of life will be held Friday, Jan. 7, at 2 p.m. in Tucson at Rincon Mountain Presbyterian Church, 8448 E. Tanque Verde Road.

At the family’s request, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Desert Christian High School Scholarship Fund (make checks payable to DCHS Scholarship Fund; memo line, In Memory of Kevin Rotty) or Rincon Mountain Presbyterian Church Playground Fund (make checks payable to RMPC; memo line, Playground Fund – Kevin Rotty).
