Head Racing has announced the establishment of the Dylan Cromwell Memorial Scholarship to honor the legacy of their late team member, Dylan Cromwell. The scholarship aims to provide promising individuals with opportunities in mechanical schooling, particularly those hailing from Cromwell’s hometown of Scobey, Montana. The announcement comes following Cromwell’s tragic demise in a highway accident while transporting one of the Head Racing Funny Cars to the NHRA Nevada Nationals in Las Vegas on October 24, 2021.

The 23-year-old Montana native’s untimely passing deeply impacted the Head Racing team and his close friend, driver Blake Alexander. To continue Cromwell’s dedication to his hometown and the sport he loved, Head Racing has united with the Cromwell family and the people of Scobey, Montana, in establishing this memorial scholarship.

“We have been working with the Cromwells for some time on establishing this,” shared Jim Head, the team owner of Head Racing. “Our mission is to help promising individuals like Dylan gain opportunities to hone their skills in mechanical schooling. It is an honor to establish this memorial scholarship alongside the Cromwells and the people of Scobey, Montana. Dylan’s legacy in his hometown and our sport will once again be celebrated this weekend.”

The first recipient of the Dylan Cromwell Memorial Scholarship is Taite Weltikol, a young aspiring diesel mechanic. Weltikol, who plans to attend Montana State University – Northern in Havre, Montana, will receive tools and other necessary items through the scholarship program.

Dylan’s father, Shane Cromwell, expressed his pride and shared Dylan’s unwavering determination in achieving his dreams.

“Follow your dreams and you can go anywhere you want to go,” said Shane Cromwell. “Every goal my son set, he met. He told his friends when he was playing tee ball that he was going to be on a professional race team one day, and he did. As hard as it was to see him go, the big plan was for him to be here a short time, and he accomplished everything he needed to here. We are excited to get his racing colleagues together to celebrate Dylan and continue his memory.”

In commemoration of Cromwell’s life, Alexander, the Head Racing team, and the Cromwell family will visit the crash site on I-70 just west of Indianapolis, accompanied by a police presence, to spread ashes. Additionally, a celebration of life will be held at the Jonnie Lindberg Motorsports shop on Thursday, August 31, at 6 p.m. EST. Jonnie Lindberg, who drove the Head Racing Funny Car when Cromwell was initially hired at the age of 18, will be in attendance.

Blake Alexander, who forged a close bond with Cromwell since their first meeting in 2019 when Alexander filled in for Lindberg at one event, expressed his gratitude to be part of this commemoration.

“I am glad that we can all get together this weekend to celebrate Dylan’s life and announce something that will provide opportunities for others,” said Alexander. “When Shane told me what him and Jim were working on, I was excited to be a small part of it. Dylan developed a mechanical knowledge at a young age due to his schooling, and I know Taite will do the same learning to be a diesel technician.”

Throughout the weekend of the NHRA U.S. Nationals, Head Racing will host the Cromwell family, including parents Shane and Tiffany and Dylan’s brother, Kevin, as they come together to remember and celebrate the life of Dylan Cromwell.
