Kyle Wanamaker has been named the 2024 WDRA Sportsman World Champion, presented by SunCoast Performance. The 37-year-old from Michigan claimed the title at the WDRA World Championships held at Montgomery International Dragway.

Wanamaker’s journey into racing began with his father, who introduced him to the sport at a young age. Now, his passion extends to his children, as nine family members regularly compete at US 131 Motorsports Park.

Since starting his racing career in 2010, Wanamaker has primarily driven his ’79 Plymouth Volare. Over fifteen seasons, he has earned three track championships and numerous high-ranking finishes, but the world championship eluded him until October 26.

This was Wanamaker’s third attempt at the world title. He advanced through the competition by defeating Brantley Duncan, Cody Spears, Joe Fox, and Chris Mesbergen before racing against David Bigham in the final.

In a tense double Mopar showdown, Wanamaker was crowned champion when Bigham lit the red light by three-thousandths of a second. “I put it in neutral and thought about what just happened. I was in shock that I was a World Champion; it was surreal,” Wanamaker said.

Celebrating in the winner’s circle, Wanamaker noted that this was his second $10,000 payout of the season, following a victory in the No Box class at Northern Michigan Dragway in July. He acknowledged that the WDRA World Championship ranks at the top of his achievements.

“I don’t know how to top this. I’m still not used to it when someone mentions that I’m a World Champion. I have to thank my dad and Tracy for all their help and hauling my car down to each world finals. Thank you to my family, friends, and everyone cheering us on for their support. Special thanks to my wife, Amber, for always keeping us organized and running our program and her business, Kreative Affect,” he said.

Wanamaker received $10,000 in cash, a billet WDRA Rod trophy, and free entry into any WDRA member track event next season as part of the WDRA Champion Card. He also received a $1,000 gift certificate from Technocraft Trailer Cabinets and a Contingency Connection Championship Package.

In a bold statement, Wanamaker expressed his determination to defend his title next season. “I am already mentally preparing to defend my title next season,” he said.
