Choosing the right clutch often means compromising between smooth street manners and the holding power needed when horsepower climbs. McLeod Racing believes it has found the middle ground with its new RST HD Clutch Kit, a twin-disc package designed for enthusiasts who spend weekdays on the street and weekends chasing quicker elapsed times.
Rated to handle up to 950 horsepower, the RST HD slots between McLeod’s established RST and RXT twin-disc clutch systems. The new offering targets performance enthusiasts who have outgrown a stock-style clutch but don’t necessarily need the aggressive characteristics of a full race-oriented package.
The difference lies in the clutch’s hybrid friction-disc design. McLeod paired a full-face organic friction material on one side for smooth engagement and long-term durability with a segmented ceramic friction material on the opposite side to increase torque capacity when the combination is pushed harder.
That approach allows the clutch to provide everyday drivability while adding the bite needed for high-performance street cars, drag-and-drive combinations and weekend racers. By blending the two friction materials, the design also reduces shock loads transferred into the transmission and the rest of the drivetrain compared to more aggressive clutch packages.
“The RST HD really is about having your cake and eating it too,” said Will Baty. “You get the street manners of an organic disc with the added holding power of ceramic—without having to step all the way up to a more aggressive twin-disc setup.”
The RST HD is available in multiple configurations to match a variety of vehicle combinations and budgets. Racers and builders can choose a version designed to work with an existing flywheel or purchase a complete package featuring either an aluminum or steel flywheel for maximum compatibility and performance.
For enthusiasts adding horsepower through superchargers, turbochargers, nitrous oxide or naturally aspirated engine upgrades, clutch selection often becomes one of the most important decisions in maintaining reliability. A clutch that slips under heavy load can limit performance, while one that is overly aggressive can make a street-driven car difficult to enjoy.
McLeod designed the RST HD to bridge that gap, giving builders another option before moving into more competition-focused twin-disc assemblies. The result is a clutch package intended to deliver increased holding capacity without sacrificing the smooth engagement expected from a vehicle that still spends considerable time on public roads.
As horsepower levels continue to climb across today’s muscle cars, hot rods and drag-and-drive builds, products that balance durability with drivability have become an increasingly important part of the performance aftermarket. With the introduction of the RST HD, McLeod expands its clutch lineup with another solution aimed squarely at enthusiasts who expect one vehicle to perform equally well on the highway and at the dragstrip.
