Only four races remain before the NHRA Countdown to the Championship begins, and the battle for the regular-season championships has reached its most important stage. Nearly $400,000 remains on the line across the four professional categories, giving every qualifying bonus and every elimination round added value as the series heads toward Indianapolis.
The regular-season championship was first introduced in 2025 to reward those who led during the regular season and has added another layer to the title chase. The regular season portion of the schedule had become for the most part irrelevant to many racers with the introduction of the Countdown.
The format now awards $150,000 to the Top Fuel and Funny Car regular-season champions, with significant bonus money also available in Pro Stock and Pro Stock Motorcycle.
Sonoma, Seattle, Brainerd, and Indianapolis become the final opportunities for racers jockeying for position headed into the Countdown.
Top Fuel appears to have become an intramural skirmish. Shawn Langdon has produced one of the strongest starts of any driver this season, collecting four victories and advancing to eight final rounds in only 10 events. Those numbers have allowed the Kalitta Motorsports driver to build a 150-point advantage over reigning world champion Doug Kalitta heading into Sonoma.
Kalitta has remained consistent enough to stay within striking distance, but time is running out to make a move on the point leader. With only four races left, he will need multiple late-round Sunday runs while hoping Langdon stumbles to make the regular-season championship race interesting.
Leah Pruett’s return to full-time competition has been a story in itself, but her 279-point deficit leaves little margin for error. She will need an exceptional finish to the regular season while the two Kalitta teammates falter.
The Funny Car points battle is a different story.
Ron Capps strengthened his position with a victory at Norwalk, extending his lead to 121 points over Matt Hagan. Capps also owns three victories this season, making him the only Funny Car driver to reach that mark in 2026.
The standings remain tightly bunched behind him. J.R. Todd trails by 123 points despite still searching for his first victory of the season, while Jack Beckman sits only 128 points behind. Jordan Vandergriff and Chad Green remain close enough that one dominant weekend could quickly tighten the standings before Indianapolis.
Capps also enters the final month with history on his side. He has traditionally performed well at Brainerd and has been one of the category’s strongest performers at Indianapolis in recent seasons.
Just like in Top Fuel, Pro Stock continues to revolve around the same two teammates.
Dallas Glenn reclaimed the points lead at Norwalk and now holds a 23-point advantage over six-time world champion Greg Anderson, whose point lead took a hit with a first-round upset loss. The KB Titan Racing teammates have gone back and forth throughout the season.
Matt Hartford has quietly pieced together another productive season with three victories. Even so, a 161-point deficit makes catching both Glenn and Anderson over four races a difficult assignment.
If history is any indication, the regular-season title could still come down to Labor Day. Glenn won at Seattle a year ago, Anderson traditionally excels at Brainerd, and few drivers have enjoyed more success at Indianapolis than the veteran.
Pro Stock Motorcycle has the shortest path to a champion. Unlike the other professional categories, only Indianapolis remains before the Countdown begins. That makes the U.S. Nationals the deciding event in the regular-season championship.
Richard Gadson strengthened his position with a victory at Norwalk and now leads defending regular-season champion Gaige Herrera by 83 points. The Vance & Hines teammates have controlled much of the category during the second half of the regular season.
Angie Smith and Matt Smith remain mathematically alive, but they trail by 111 and 136 points, respectively. Both will need a dominant weekend at Indianapolis and help elsewhere to change the outcome.
The calendar has become the biggest opponent for every championship hopeful who claims the regular-season championship before the Countdown resets the standings for the chase to the world title.
