Drag racing has lost another legend.
Gene Cromer, known for his Moonlighter race cars, died on July 14, 2021. He was involved in a non-racing accident on June 18.
Cromer returned to drag racing in 2012, first as a Grand Marshal for the inaugural South East Gassers event in Greer, SC, and the following year behind the wheel of his restored Gasser which had been stored in a shed in his backyard.
Cromer earned his legendary reputation, racing around various strips in the Carolinas and Georgia. His Moonlight Gassers ran at the front of the pack, as well as his Factory Experimental Mustang. Cromer was even a pioneer in the formative years of the Funny Cars. His final race car in the early era was a Maverick Pro Stocker
Our thoughts and prayers are with the Cromer family during this difficult time.
