SUNDAY FINAL – TORRENCE, WILKERSON AND HERRERA PICK UP BIG WINS IN SEATTLE
Four-time NHRA Top Fuel champion Steve Torrence asserted his dominance at Pacific Raceways on Sunday, securing his first win of the 2023 season and taking over the points lead. Torrence surged past Doug Kalitta in the final round of the 34th annual Flav-R-Pac NHRA Northwest Nationals.
Joining Torrence in victory were Tim Wilkerson in Funny Car and Gaige Herrera in Pro Stock Motorcycle. These triumphs marked the 11th race out of 21 in the 2023 NHRA Camping World Drag Racing Series season.
Torrence clinched his 54th career win, turning in a 3.940 second elapsed time at only 289.26 mph in his Capco Contractors/Toyota dragster. This win denied Kalitta his 50th overall victory and marked a milestone for Toyota, as it commemorated the automaker’s 200th overall NHRA win.
To emerge victorious, Torrence had to surpass tough opponents along the way. He defeated Josh Hart, defending world champion Brittany Force, and Shawn Langdon to secure a spot in the finals. With this win, Torrence moved four points ahead of Justin Ashley in the overall standings. Notably, this victory was Torrence’s first since the St. Louis race in the Countdown to the Championship last year. Moreover, he achieved a thrilling double-up weekend by also winning the Mission #2Fast2Tasty NHRA Challenge on Saturday in Seattle.
Reflecting on his performance, Torrence expressed his satisfaction. ,
“The performance today, two rounds were stellar and two rounds weren’t that stellar,” Torrence said. “It’s difficult when things are not absolutely great to be as confident as you need to be to drive these things successfully.”
Torrence highlighted the significance of winning at this time, mentioning the valuable momentum gained. He also emphasized the importance of consistency, acknowledging that despite previous challenges, his confidence is back, and he is determined to continue moving forward.
Meanwhile, in the Funny Car category, Tim Wilkerson exemplified consistency, cementing his victory with three consecutive 4.00 runs on Sunday. He completed his winning run in the championship round, with a time of 4.007 seconds at 321.96 mph in his SCAG Power Equipment/Levi, Ray & Shoup Ford Mustang. This was Wilkerson’s second win of the season, marking his 24th career victory. Additionally, it secured his fourth overall victory at Pacific Raceways. Throughout the day, Wilkerson faced off against respected competitors including points leader Matt Hagan, back-to-back world champion Ron Capps, and Blake Alexander.
“I’m very, very proud of my guys today,” Wilkerson said. “They were flawless.”
Wilkerson acknowledged the ups and downs he has encountered in recent races and his determination to improve.
“Just hang in there. We’ve got that 24-hour rule: 24 hours after we win, lose or draw? Start over, because you can’t dwell on that stuff,” Wilkerson explained. “It’ll drive you crazy.”
J.R. Todd was the runner-up in the Funny Car category, reaching the finals in Seattle for the second consecutive year. His path to the finals included victories against Alex Laughlin, Cruz Pedregon, and Chad Green. With this result, Todd secured his second runner-up finish this year, extending his total career finals appearances to 43. Hagan maintained his points lead, holding a 17-point advantage over Capps heading into the upcoming Sonoma race.
Pro Stock Motorcycle’s points leader, Gaige Herrera, continued his dominant run at Pacific Raceways, claiming victory in the category. Herrera sealed a perfect weekend with a winning time of 6.764 seconds at 198.99 mph on his Vance & Hines/Mission Foods bike, defeating teammate Eddie Krawiec. This victory marked his fifth win out of seven races in this category in 2023, and Herrera achieved a second perfect weekend after qualifying as the top rider and winning the Mission #2Fast2Tasty NHRA Challenge.
Having already won in Denver, Herrera has set his sights on sweeping the Western Swing. This accomplishment has never been achieved in Pro Stock Motorcycle and hasn’t happened for any competitor since 2009.
“It means a lot to be the first winner and I’m glad we were able to put on a show for them,” Herrera said. “The track was smooth and one of the best tracks I’ve been on, and Andrew (Hines, crew chief) and the guys had our bike running great. That was probably one of my toughest finals, having to race the boss and one of the guys that has helped me so much. Overall, though, it was awesome racing him and it was just business as usual and I’m happy to be on top. “I’ve had an awesome two races and I hope to do well in Sonoma. It obviously would be amazing to sweep (the Western Swing), so I’m definitely excited. Plus, we’ve got the (Pro Stock Motorcycle) All-Star Callout, so it’s going to be a busy, busy weekend. The whole field is tightening up and Sonoma is always a fast track, so it’s going to be very competitive.”
Krawiec, who aimed for his 50th career victory, reached the final round for the 82nd time overall and first time in 2023 with wins against Ryan Oehler, rookie Chase Van Sant and defending world champion Matt Smith.
The NHRA Camping World Drag Racing Series closes out the famed three-race Western Swing with the Denso NHRA Sonoma Nationals on July 28-30 at Sonoma Raceway.

Defending NHRA Funny Car world champion Ron Capps celebrated his third win in the Mission #2Fast2Tasty NHRA Challenge bonus race at the Pacific Raceways on Saturday. The victory came after he defeated J.R. Todd in the final round of the event, which is part of the 34th annual Flav-R-Pac NHRA Northwest Nationals.
In the other divisions, Steve Torrence emerged victorious in Top Fuel, and Gaige Herrera claimed the victory in Pro Stock Motorcycle in the Mission #2Fast2Tasty NHRA Challenge held in Seattle.
Capps, driving his 11,000-horsepower NAPA Auto Parts Toyota GR Supra, completed the race in 3.951 seconds at 322.65 mph, surpassing Todd’s run of 3.967 at 323.81 mph. With this win, Capps has now secured three specialty event victories in the last four races. Looking ahead to Sunday’s race in Seattle, the two-time world champ aims to achieve his first double-up weekend of the year. Capps has already claimed two career event wins at this location.
“This deal has really changed the way you wake up Saturday morning,” Capps said. “There’s a lot going on inside your head up there. You’re trying to win this and you’re still trying to improve your qualifying spot, too, but this deal is really cool. We’re very excited to get another win in this and it also gives us a lot of good data for tomorrow.”
Capps extended his gratitude to Mission Foods for organizing the event, stating.
“I want to just say it over and over: Thank you to Mission Foods for putting this on,” Capps continued. “They really created something cool. We all saw the points is the thing that stood out for most; it’s great money, we appreciate that, too. But as you know, we won the world championship last year by less than a handful of points.”
Torrence, a four-time Top Fuel world champion, clinched his first win of the season in the Mission #2Fast2Tasty NHRA Challenge. With a run of 3.788 at 325.61 mph in his 11,000-horsepower Capco Contractors/Toyota dragster, Torrence defeated opponent Shawn Langdon in the final round.
This victory provided Torrence, who ranked second in points coming into the event, with a much-needed boost in confidence as he gears up for Sunday’s eliminations.
“We had a really good race car in Denver and we should have won (in the semifinals against Kalitta),” Torrence said. “It definitely gives me a boost of confidence in my race car. I went to the Western Swing with a completely different mindset. To win that gives us a lot of confidence going into raceday tomorrow. It’s the first win we’ve had in a while and I think that’s finally coming around the way that we want to. The win light came on in our side and we won the race. I trusted my guys and my race. We didn’t win four world championships by not trusting in them.”
Herrera, the current Pro Stock Motorcycle points leader, dominated the Mission #2Fast2Tasty NHRA Challenge. He emerged victorious in the finals against Angie Smith, clocking a time of 6.794 seconds at 197.42 mph on his Vance & Hines/Mission Foods Suzuki. With this win, Herrera secured his third victory in the challenge and also took the No. 1 qualifying spot in the category’s first appearance at Pacific Raceways.
Herrera aims to maintain his consistency and strong performance on Sunday, giving him a chance to achieve a double-up for the second time this season.
“I feel like we’re kind of back in the groove we had before Bristol, so to be able to come out here and get a third Mission win, it’s awesome,” Herrera said. “And to be the No. 1 qualifier, it’s just an awesome start to the weekend. All the credit goes to the whole team. They really know their stuff. They’ve been doing this for many years and that gives me all the confidence in the world as a rider.
“The big thing for me on Sunday is to be consistent on the bike, but I feel very confident we can have a good day.”
The Flav-R-Pac NHRA Northwest Nationals eliminations are set to kick off at 10:30 a.m. PT on Sunday at the Pacific Raceways.

SATURDAY QUALIFYING – JOHN FORCE, SALINAS AND HERRERA HEADLINE SEATTLE NO. 1 QUALIFIERS
John Force emerged as the dominant driver in Funny Car qualifying at the Flav-R-Pac NHRA Northwest Nationals, claiming the No. 1 spot for the first time this season. The Funny Car legend stole the show at Pacific Raceways with a blistering run of 3.915 at 327.35 in his 11,000-horsepower PEAK Antifreeze & Coolant Chevrolet Camaro SS.
Force’s impressive performance marked his 166th career No. 1 qualifier, further solidifying his status as a 16-time world champion. The racing veteran expressed his enthusiasm for the upcoming race.
“We have a race to win tomorrow, our cars are good, some are a little bit off, some are hot,” Force said. “I didn’t think we’d be that fast. But like Danny [Hood, crew chief] said, ‘Hang on.’ So when he does that, I know he’s pushing it. So I’m excited and I love Seattle.”
Fellow competitors also made their mark in their respective categories, with Mike Salinas topping the Top Fuel leaderboard and Gaige Herrera leading the Pro Stock Motorcycle field.
Salinas showcased his prowess with a sensational Saturday performance, securing his second No. 1 qualifier of the season and the 13th of his career. Piloting his 11,000-horsepower Valley Services/Scrappers Racing dragster, he blazed across the track in 3.743 seconds at 329.02 mph.
Salinas expressed satisfaction with his team’s meticulous testing efforts.
“We tested a lot, we just didn’t share it with anybody,” Salinas said. “We just fell on our face and tried all kinds of different things. All the stuff we did learn, we’re just applying it now, and the car seems to be responding exactly the way we want it to.”
Meanwhile, Herrera continued his domination in the Pro Stock Motorcycle category.
Herrera, the current points leader, earned his sixth No. 1 qualifier of the 2023 season. His Friday run of 6.767 seconds at 198.09 mph proved insurmountable for his rivals. Teammate Eddie Krawiec secured the second position with a time of 6.776 seconds at 198.82 mph, as A. Smith sealed third place with a run of 6.787 seconds at 200.29 mph.
Notably, Herrera’s impressive performance also marked the first time a Pro Stock Motorcycle exceeded 200 mph at the Seattle track.

FRIDAY QUALIFYING – KALITTA, TASCA AND HERRERA GRAB EARLY QUALIFYING LEAD AT FLAV-R-PAC NHRA NORTHWEST NATIONALS
Top Fuel veteran Doug Kalitta is on the hunt for his 50th career victory, and he took a major step toward achieving that milestone on Friday at the 34th annual Flav-R-Pac NHRA Northwest Nationals at Pacific Raceway. Kalitta secured the provisional No. 1 qualifier position with an impressive performance.
Joining Kalitta as provisional No. 1 qualifiers are Bob Tasca III in Funny Car and Gaige Herrera in Pro Stock Motorcycle. These drivers have set themselves apart as the top contenders in their respective categories during the 11th race of the 2023 NHRA Camping World Drag Racing Series season.
Driving his Mac Tools dragster with 11,000 horsepower, Kalitta blazed down the track with a noteworthy time of 3.753 seconds at 327.66 mph. This exceptional run puts him in contention for his second top spot of the season and adds another milestone to his career with a total of 53 top qualifiers. Kalitta, a 49-time event winner, is optimistic about his chances to secure his second victory in Seattle as part of the NHRA’s three-race Western Swing.
Reflecting on his upcoming race and pursuit of the 50-win mark, Kalitta humbly said, “I’m very proud of what we’ve accomplished to get to 49 wins and we’d love to get to 50, but you try not to make too big a deal out of it. But it’s certainly getting to that point with it being (nearly) three years. We’ll just keep digging and hopefully all the stars align, and we get another win. It’s a humbling sport for sure, and you’ve just got to take the good with the bad and take advantage of the opportunities.”
Currently, Clay Millican holds the second position after completing his run in 3.779 seconds at 322.88 mph, while Shawn Langdon sits in third with a time of 3.786 seconds at 321.27 mph. Leading the points race, Justin Ashley is close behind with a pass of 3.801 seconds at 319.45 mph.
In the Funny Car category, Bob Tasca III aims to secure his second consecutive No. 1 qualifier position in Seattle and the fifth of the season. Tasca’s impressive run in his 11,000-horsepower Motorcraft/Quick Lane Ford Mustang resulted in a time of 3.964 seconds at 320.13 mph during qualifying. Tasca, who is currently sixth in points, is determined to add to his five wins this season.
Reflecting on his qualifying run, Tasca shared, “We did so good here during qualifying last year, and we got snake bit in the (second) round, but what I was really happy about this run is that I always ask the crew chiefs, ‘what is it going to run?’ And Aaron (Brooks) goes, ‘Around 3.96,’ and you see John Force run (3.98), you know .96 is going to be a great run out there. So good way to start.”
Tasca expects tough competition in the coming qualifying rounds but remains confident in his team’s abilities, saying, “Tomorrow, I think you’ll see more of the same in Q2, and then Q3 will be the throwdown run, so I certainly don’t expect this to hold for No. 1 tomorrow night, but I fully expect us to pick up in the last session. So we’ll see what we can do.”
Trailing Tasca in the provisional standings is legendary driver John Force with a time of 3.982 seconds at 322.42 mph. Tim Wilkerson holds the third position after completing his run in 3.983 seconds at 320.36 mph. Matt Hagan, the current points leader and winner in Denver, is currently in seventh place.
In the Pro Stock Motorcycle category, Gaige Herrera, the points leader, made an impressive debut at Pacific Raceways by securing the No. 1 qualifier position with a time of 6.767 seconds at 198.09 mph aboard his Vance & Hines/Mission Foods Suzuki. Following his recent victory in Denver, Herrera aims to continue his winning streak by becoming the first rider to sweep the Western Swing.
Expressing his satisfaction with the result, Herrera said, “For us to come out with the win (in Denver), we were definitely in awe. I’m glad to be back as the provisional No. 1, and hopefully, we’re going to hold on to them tomorrow.”
Despite the challenging run, Herrera remains confident in his team’s ability to improve, stating, “The run did not feel good at all. When I left the line, it went left, and then I had to correct it. It felt like in third gear it kind of went left again, so I corrected again. It gives me confidence that we can go even quicker tomorrow.”
Herrera’s teammate, Eddie Krawiec, is second with a 6.776 at 198.82. He is also seeking his 50th career win. Steve Johnson is third after going 6.809 at 195.45.
