WILWOOD'S NEW '80 - '87 GM G-BODY DISC SPINDLES

80-87_G_body_140-12297
Wilwood Engineering has recently introduced three new front disc brake kits that feature the latest in disc brake technology. These kits are available in 12.19”, 12.88” or 14.00” rotor diameters depending on whether you need big, bigger, or the biggest in braking performance.  These kits are configured for high performance street or track competition and are compatible with the original equipment master cylinder and ABS system.

Their 12.19” kit features forged Dynalite 4 piston lug mount calipers clamping down on HP plain face rotors.  The kit, part number 140-12297, comes with aluminum hubs, bearings and seals, rotor adapters, caliper mounting brackets, and all necessary hardware. The 12.88” (part number 140-12298) and 14.00” (part number 140-12299) kits feature Forged Narrow Superlite 6R differential bore radial mount calipers.  Calipers work in conjunction with GT asymmetrical face slot pattern rotors.  Both kits come with aluminum hubs, bearings and seals, hats, radial mount caliper brackets, and all necessary hardware. Optional SRP drilled and slotted rotors and red powder coated calipers are available in all kit configurations. Wilwood BP-10 high performance street pads are standard in all three kits. Other brake pad compounds, including those for off-road applications, are also available. Stainless steel braided flexline hose kits are necessary to connect the caliper to the brake system, but not included with the kit and must be ordered separately.  Call for details and part number ordering information.

All of Wilwood’s performance brake kits are loaded with cutting edge technology built on decades of domination in world motorsports. These kits will not only exceed your braking demands, on and off the track, but also enhance the appearance of your General Motors vehicle.  And, all three kits are an easy bolt-on installation.

TECH: MODERN MUSCLE OFFERS TIPS TO NEXT BRACKET

Let’s face it, GM has been building one of the best performance vehicles for years now with the Corvette. Rock solid reliability, great handling, good fuel economy and lots of power make the Corvette an icon in the industry and a target on the streets. Staying a head of the competition can be as simple as swapping a tire for better traction or as hard as building a motor geared for tons of power. With that in mind, the experts at Modern Muscle have put together a list of common modifications to take your pride and joy down to the ET bracket you desire.

Breaking Into The 12’s
Bob_BeforeGetting into the 12’s is pretty commonplace nowadays for most Vette owners. The C6 is pretty much there and the C5 only needs a couple of things. “We generally recommend using a standard group of bolt ons for most people looking to get into the 12’s,” says Justin Meyers, Vice President of Modern Muscle. These bolt ons generally include:

-Adding a cold air intake and exhaust system to help the engine breathe better
-Swapping tires to a drag radial to increase traction at the track
-Adding a custom tune to the engine to properly utilize the other changes already made

“One additional item that most people often over look is the spark plugs,” continues Meyers. “With the increased air flow, it is important to get the right amount of heat out of the plug. While this won’t help set any records, it does help with efficiency and ensures the engine continues to run as well as it can.”

Breaking Into The 11’s
Getting past the 12’s and into the 11’s can still be done with bolting key components to the engine. The fork in the road here is how the power is made. Three of the most common options are listed below:

Option 1-Add a Shot of Nitrous
-Adding a 100 shot of nitrous will get the car into the 11’s and is probably the easiest and cheapest way. The downside to this approach is that spray is only used for the track and unless you are making a pass you will notice no difference in power during regular driving.

Option 2-Keep It Natural and Add Mechanical Power Adders
-If you are a person looking to keep the engine naturally aspirated, then swapping out to a custom camshaft and either upgrading your clutch or raising the stall will let you eak into the 11’s with a C6. Add a 102mm FAST intake manifold and a good port and polish to get the car into the low 11’s. For a C5, it is probably going to require a larger intake manifold and ported and/or aftermarket heads to get into the 11’s.

Option 3-Add More Air, Make More Power
-If you are a forced induction person, adding a supercharger (roots, centrifugal, twin screw) is the best way to go. The centrifugal supercharger is probably the best bang for the buck, but anyway you go, it only takes around 6 to 8lbs of boost to get into the 11’s.  When you are adding this much air, upgrading the fuel system to larger injectors is required. If you plan to run in the low 11’s then you will need to do a complete fuel system upgrade (fuel pump, lines, filters and regulators) anyways.

“Keep in mind all of these suggestions are for street vehicles and not dedicated track vehicles. Most Vette owners want to have a great performing vehicle without sacrificing their car,” states Meyers.

Breaking Into the 10’s
Dave_EngineA streetable 10 second car is hard to beat.  Unfortunately, it does take some work to get there.

    Must Haves:
-The rear gears need to be upgraded.
-Manual vehicles need a high performance clutch.
-Automatics transmissions need to be gone through and beefed up.  A new high stall converter is needed.
-Better tires with smaller wheels are a must.  Increased tire side wall offers more ability to wrinkle, resulting in better traction at launch.
-Complete fuel system.
-Forged internals are a must at this level.  So, while upgrading the internals, now is a good time to think about cubic inches.  For the LS3, a 418ci stroker kit is extremely popular.  On the C5 side of things, many people opt for the LQ9 or LQ4 truck blocks.  Then stroke them to a 402 or 408.

Option 1-Naturality Aspirated
-When building the motor, you will want to increase compression, change the camshaft to optimize air flow, upgrade to high flowing heads and intake.  Getting with a skilled builder before you start ordering parts is key at this level.

Option 2-Forced Induction
-Once you have a stout bottom end, running higher boost pressure and more fuel is possible.  More air plus more fuel equals more power!

Option 3-Combinations
-Relying on spray for the added horsepower at the track, allows for a slightly milder street combination.  So, once the bottom end is built you can rely on the spray for the additional power without worrying about bending a rod.  Running something like a 300 shot with a naturally aspirated stroker engine or running 100 shot with 6 to 8 lbs of boost can result in 10’s.

“Regardless of how you get there, having a 10 second streetable vehicle requires a lot of forethought and planning. We have built quite a few and they can be a lot of fun,” adds Meyers.

1320 CONCEPTS PRESENTS NEW DECAL PRODUCT LINE

1320SocialBlueAfter months of planning, debut company 1320 Concepts is proud to announce their first line of decals for the drag racing community. The decals are based off of the popular Euro sticker that can be found in major tourist destinations across the country. Instead of “OBX” or “CLE”, 1320 Concepts’ Euro decals will feature the abbreviations for the various classes in drag racing, like TF, FC, TAD, TAFC, and so on.

“We noticed the popularity of this kind of sticker and thought that it might work within the drag racing community. Our first release will include designs for fans of Top Fuel Dragsters, Funny Cars, Top Alcohol Dragsters, and Top Alcohol Funny Cars. Over the course of the season we’ll release other designs for the other classes. We’re also planning several special editions where the proceeds will go to a charity that is within the sport,” said Doug Foley Jr., co-owner of 1320 Concepts.

1320 Concepts’ Euro decals are geared towards anyone; fans, drivers, team owners, crew members and anyone else that wants to show their involvement in the fastest sport on earth. They look great on a street car, tow vehicle, or Top Fuel Dragster. The decals will be available on the 1320 Concepts website (www.1320concepts.com) initially.

“We’re currently working on getting the stickers in track souvenir stores, as well as team merchandise trailers. Custom orders are also something that we can do. Contact us with your project ideas and we’ll turn them into a decal that you can sell to fans or give away to sponsors or clients,” said Doug Foley Jr.

For more information on 1320 Concepts and their line of decals, visit them on the web at www.1320concepts.com.

VP OFFERS NEW PRODUCTS

vpVP Racing Fuels will start its 37th race season with a full arsenal of its popular leaded and unleaded race fuels. Fuels for drag racing, stock car racing, dirt track racing, powersports and open wheel competition have positioned VP as the leader in race fuel development as well as the most diversified race fuel brand in motorsports.

“We’ve developed many new fuel products, all of which will debut over the coming weeks,” said Jim Kelly, VP’s Director of Race Fuel Sales. “I’m confident racers and engine builders alike will be very pleased with our newborns, which include a DBI break-in fuel, an ethanol-free Pre-Mix for two strokes, another impressive FIA rally fuel blend, a new FIM motorcycle blend, and a new product that will more than satisfy racers asking us for an E-85 type fuel. Many hours of R&D across the U.S. have produced what we believe will set us apart – again – from the other race fuel companies we compete against.”

“After we announced the launch of VP-branded gas stations across the country a few months back, a few people expressed concern that VP was following other companies that focused on retail to general consumers and we might lose interest in what we’re known for,” Kelly continued. “But that’s not the case at all. Rest assured, at VP it’s still all about MAKIN’ POWER!”

“Our CEO and R&D guru, Steve Burns, just completed a long round of testing with oval track, drag race and powersports engine builders here in the U.S.” Kelly added. “While another division within VP is working the branded station program, the main focus at VP Racing Fuels continues to be maintaining our position as a leader in all forms of racing. That will never change.”

DEMON CARBS RETURN WITH SIX NEW DESIGNS

Demon Carburetion has introduced 6 new and improved four-barrel carburetors in the following sizes: 650, 750, and 850. Known as Speed Demons, each size is available in two forms: three are equipped with mechanically operated secondary throttle plates; demonthe remaining three with vacuum-operated secondaries.

Vacuum-operated secondary throttle plates are ideally suited to engines with automatic transmissions lacking high-speed stall converters. Alternatively, carburetors with mechanical secondaries are preferable for vehicles with manual transmissions or automatics with higher stall-speed converters, operating at 2,500 to 2,800rpm. Vacuum-secondary Speed Demons are instantly recognizable by the red billet aluminum cap on the vacuum pod.

Speed Demons are classified as general performance entry-level downdraft carburetors. Featuring down-leg boost venturii, they replace most standard square-flange carburetors on engines with camshaft durations of up to 240 degrees @ .050in of valve opening. The 650 model performs at its best on mildly tuned engines with displacements of 302 to 427cu in. The larger 750 Speed Demon works exceptionally well on 393 to 477cid engines and excels on mildly tuned engines from 427 to 455cu in. The largest carburetor of this new Speed Demon range, the 850, is particularly well-suited for operation on big-block crate motors, ranging in displacements from 488 to 540cu in.

All vacuum-secondary Speed Demons are supplied with electric chokes. However, mechanical-secondary units have provision for optional choke mechanisms. If desirable, these can be purchased in either manual or electric styles.

Both vacuum and mechanical Speed Demons are supplied with an integral kick-down mechanism that accepts Ford’s transmission linkage. Other key upgrades include Demon’s billet metering blocks and base plates complete with Idle-Eze™, a useful air valve that allows you to set the idle speed without disturbing the throttle plates from their correct location. Throttle plates are mounted on Teflon-coated throttle shafts. Crucially, four-corner idle circuitry, high-flow choke tower, and power valve backfire protection are provided to complete the package. Finished in silver die chromate, Speed Demon tuning parts are interchangeable with similar carburetors of other manufacture.

PRO SYSTEMS' SV1 UPGRADES

sv1bracket29

centerlineAfter months of work the SV1 now has its own exclusive metering block and a revised booster hole layout, to further improve the SV1 design.

Says company President Patrick James, "The SV1 is a different animal and on some combinations it was just brutally fast, on other combinations it was telling us it wanted something.  After doing some fluid testing and cut-away examinations there were some things that needed changed in the metering block to better suit what the SV1 wanted.  The SV1 booster makes a lot of signal and we were using up a lot of the emulsion package bleeding off signal in an effort to get the driveability where it wanted to be.  Then on some combinations we were losing power, or had bled off too much signal as a result of this compromise.  Well our new metering block and revised booster layout stopped all those compromises.  The new SV1 for 2012 is now faster and better than ever before."

James further explains, "We really don't see an end in sight on improving this design, every time we discover something new, it shows us another opportunity.  The SV1 design has been great, it gathered over a dozen combined World Records and Class Championships in its first year and its getting better every year.  10 years from now I can't imagine where it will be, but it on average makes about 10-15 more h.p. over any four barrel we test it against.  The design is still new and its a great design, a great design thats only getting better every year."
